Beyerdynamic DT 770 Headphones Review

Beyerdynamic's DT 770s are a closed-back, over-ear option. Although the closed-back design typically lends itself to above average isolation, this isn't the case with the DT 770s. Middling isolation, their large size, and their long, thick cord make these headphones a better option for at-home use than for your morning commute.

The DT 770s are available through Beyerdynamic's MANUFAKTUR program, which lets you customize various aspects of the headphones, such as the coloration of each individual part, their impedance, and the style of their cord. While this is a great feature for customization, users will have to pay a premium for some of the alternate color options.

Like other Beyerdynamic headphones we've reviewed, we found these were very comfortable over a few hours. Beyond a certain point, however, they got increasingly uncomfortable, due to their weight and the relatively thin padding on their band.

The DT 770s are currently available for $285.

The DT 770s did well overall on our audio quality tests. Their frequency response was good overall, but was a bit deemphasized towards the high-end. Like other Beyerdynamic headphones, the DT 770s didn't have any issues with distortion. Their tracking could be slightly off at times, which means some frequency bands might sound a bit louder in one ear than another, but weren't bad overall.

As we alluded to above, the DT 770s have somewhat poor isolation for a closed-back set of headphones. They don't have a specific issue with leakage, but loud playback will be audible to those near you. The headphones are capable of a decent volume output without succumbing to high distortion. Again, we recommend using these headphones in a private listening area for optimal results.

Comparisons  (read more in-depth comparisons at HeadphoneInfo.com)
The DT 770s are a good pair of headphones with some nice customization available, courtesy of MANUFAKTUR. If you're looking for a slightly more upscale set of closed-back headphones, the Audio-Technica ATH-ESW9s are a good pick. If you're solely looking for isolation, you should check into the Denon AH-NC732s. They have optional active noise cancellation and, unlike the majority of active-cancellers out there, have very low distortion when the feature isn't active. If you'd rather get a set of open-backed headphones, the Sennheiser HD 555s or 650s are good options if you're looking outside of Beyerdynamic.
